Why watermark a PDF
A watermark sets expectations that a filename cannot. Marking a document DRAFT stops a working version being quoted as final, CONFIDENTIAL travels with the file after it has been forwarded, and a company mark on a proposal or set of drawings makes casual reuse obvious. Because the mark sits across the content rather than in a corner, it survives screenshots and reprints.
About the preview and deterrence
The live preview is drawn in your browser as an approximation; the watermark you download is rendered on the server, so spacing and font metrics can differ slightly from what you saw. Text watermarks cost one credit, while image watermarks need a plan but no credit, and image uploads are size- and type-checked before anything is processed. Worth being clear about the security question: a watermark is a deterrent and a provenance marker, not access control, since a determined recipient can still attempt removal. When you need to restrict who can open a file at all, use password protection.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I add a text or image watermark to a PDF online?
- Yes. The online PDF watermark tool supports text for one credit. Image watermarks require premium access but no credit; the image must be a validated PNG or JPEG no larger than 5 MiB.
- Will the downloaded watermark look exactly like the preview?
- The browser preview is an approximation. The final watermark is rendered by the server, so spacing, font metrics, and placement can differ slightly. Review the downloaded PDF before distributing it.
- Where is the watermark applied?
- The watermark is tiled across every page. You can adjust opacity, rotation, and spacing density; text mode also exposes font size and colour. This page does not offer a per-page range selector.
- Does watermarking rasterise the PDF or preserve every feature?
- The integration asks the processing engine not to convert pages to images, so it does not intentionally rasterise the document. Preservation of bookmarks, links, forms, metadata, and signatures is not guaranteed, and any modification can invalidate a digital signature.
