Why add page numbers to a PDF

Numbered pages are what make a document referenceable. Courts and tender portals frequently require them, reviewers need to be able to say "clause 4 on page 12", and anyone printing a long bundle will eventually drop it. A "Page 3 of 40" label also tells the reader whether they are holding the whole document, which a bare number cannot.

About placement and labels

Position is stored as a proportion of the page rather than in pixels, so the spot you choose in the preview is the spot used on every selected page regardless of zoom or page size. Labels are templates: {n} becomes the current number and {total} the page count, and the starting number is yours to set when front matter should not count as page one. Numbering runs server-side for one credit and stamps real text onto the page instead of rasterising it, though bookmarks, links, forms, metadata and existing signatures are not independently verified afterwards.
